How much money can you really make on HubPages?

I was recently talking with former colleagues about HubPages and I was asked the usual questions. The first question is usually why should I write a hub as opposed to a blog.

I’ve already covered this question so I will focus on the other questions that I was asked:

How much money can you really make on HubPages?

Ultimately, that’s a tough question. It is much easier to talk about how the money gets calculated. At HubPages, authors get 60% of all AdSense revenues from their hubs as well as 60% of any the eBay, Amazon, or Kontera affiliate revenue. That’s all good and fine but how much money? It depends not only on traffic but also on the type of traffic. You need to attract traffic that matches the ads and promotions that you have on your hub.

How much money does our top hubber make?

You could focus on the hubbers that make the most money but that is misleading. You wouldn’t judge how much a typical book author makes by looking at J. K. Rowling’s salary. Of course, if you are writing your hub solely to make money, that is also not a good indicator of money potential since readers may not come back and Google search may penalize your hub page and you will be deeply buried in the Google search results.

Hubber revenue is private so I can’t state definitively the top revenue earner. I do know that one hub has often made over $100 in one day. This hub took about 30 minutes to write and it is over 2 years old. I’ve talked about it in a previous posting so go there if you want more details. Still, it is very misleading, in my opinion, to use this result as your yardstick.

OK, already, can’t you give me any dollar amount for an average hubber?

Well, assuming that you focus on providing valuable content to your reader, then here is the number that I’ve heard. If you do, say, 10 reasonable quality hubs each month for 10 months, then by month 11, you should be making roughly $50/month. Many authors make more than this and the web traffic is the limit for professional writers. Still, for the hard worker with average talent, $50/month should be achievable.

Here’s the reasoning behind this number. It takes time to build up web traffic. There’s a learning curve that happens as you become familiar with the hub tools available. And even following this, it takes time to build up your hubscore and attract web traffic. Keep in mind: hubs tend to be hit-or-miss. Your best hub may bring in more money than the other hubs combined but it is not always clear ahead of time which one of your hubs will be the most popular. That’s why you need to create 10 a month.

I’ve heard that hubs that are overly photo rich or have lots of videos do not do as well as hubs that are text rich. Additionally, it’s good to be active in hubpages. When you are first getting started, participate in the hub makeover forum. Get involved in the topic discussions and feel free to post requests and also to ask for help when it’s needed. Also, use tags. We have a tool to suggest tags if you have trouble coming up with terms.

Since it’s in HubPages’ interest to drive traffic to high quality hubs, we have a set of policies that are really designed to encourage best practices in hub creation. For example, while hubs can be used to promote web sites, we do not allow more than 2 links to any one external domain.

How long does it take to write a hub?

I’ve heard that it takes many people 20-30 minutes to write a hub of reasonably good quality on a topic that they are already familiar with: an evaluation of a movie, product, description of a hobby, or details on a good cause that you believe in, poetry, or anecdotes from your life. For me, it takes much longer than 30 minutes to write a hub, but I tend to write on ambitious topics like: How Long Did Ancient Civilizations Last? I’ve been most successful when I write about what I’m most interested in. I think that’s more important than writing to make money. By the way, the hub that I just listed above is my fastest growing hub in traffic. Who would have thought?

Make Money Writing For Hubpages

Over the last month or so I have been running a little bit of an experiment.

Basically, after hearing from some others that there is money to be made with Hubpages, I decided to give it a go.

What is Hubpages?

Before I start getting into detail, I should explain the basics. Hubpages is a website that basically allows you to publish an article on their site. I use the term “article” loosely because it can be as short as an article or more like a single page website. It is completely up to the user. A hub (their lingo for article) can be about any topic you could possibly want to write about. You could create a hub explaining 10 things you wished people knew about you, how to play guitar with your toes, or facts about albino grizzly bears.

You do not need to be a great writer and honestly, I have seen some people who are terrible writers do quite well. All you need is the ability to say a little bit about something. And who knows maybe hubpages will be the first step to helping you make money from a blog?

So how do you make money with Hubpages?

There are actually a variety of ways, but the simplest and most effective way I have found so far has been by using Google Adsense. After you finish your first hub you can install your Adsense ID and you will begin sharing the revenue with Hubpages for your hubs.

If you pick good keywords (which I will get to in a minute) you will likely begin getting traffic from the search engines within 24 hours of publishing it. If these visitors click on the ads you will get a cut of that revenue (I think it is 60%).

My results during July

I spent most of July trying to create a hub every day or so and I am now up to 23 hubs. I didn’t do the best job with keyword research and did very little if any work after creating the hubs and yetadsense still made $47.14 in July.

This breaks down to $2.05 per hub/month. Two dollars doesn’t sound too exciting, but if you consider that is probably completely passive income it is pretty exciting. In theory, that $2 per hub should continue paying that each month – and to be honest most pages do better in the search engines after they have been around a few months or more. So it very well could increase over time as well.

I am going to continue to create some more hubs during the month of August and see what the results are. I will try to keep this post updated with the new results each month.

Steps to get started

If you are interested in giving this a shot, these are the steps to get started.

1. Sign up at Hubpages
2. Create your first hub. Once you get to the design page, it is pretty self-explanatory.
3. Sign up for an Adsense account (if you don’t have one). This might take a couple days to get approval.
4. Add your Adsense ID to Hubpages. When you are logged into Hubpages, you click the “My Account” button, and then the “Affiliate Settings” link. This is where you will install your Adsense ID.
5. That’s it. Once it is installed, you will begin making money when someone clicks on the ads.Warning: do not click the ads yourself or tell others to click them. Google will catch you and will ban you from the program.

Keys to succeeding

Keyword research

This is probably the most important part. The title of your hub needs to be based on your keyword research. A good place to look is Google’s Keyword Research tool – drop in some keywords that your article might be about and see what comes back at you. I believe this is more of an art than a science, so just find a keyword phrase that is being searched for and give it a shot.

But I do suggest looking for longer phrases, i.e. Don’t title your page “ipods” but something like “how to put music on your ipod” would likely work a lot better. But either way, you just have to test to see what works. Sometimes your research will work just like planned and other times it won’t. But the good news is that even if you don’t do any research, you still have a chance of picking up some visitors on Hubpages. But, the more you plan out your keywords the better you will do.

Get Links

Like I mentioned above, I didn’t really get many links to my hubs, but if you can link to it from your blogs and get other links it will definitely be helpful. Submitting it to social bookmarking sites might be helpful as well. Linking your hubs to each other is a good idea too.

Content

Generally speaking the more content you put on your hub the better. I would say 400 words should be a minimum. Shooting for 600-1000 would probably be best. And add as many of the widgets as you can. You can add a news widget, a poll to ask your readers a question, etc. You don’t necessarily NEED to add a bunch of widgets, but it will probably help.

Learn and adapt

Not all hubs will work. In fact, for me of the 23 I have created thus far 5 of them are generating about 90% of the traffic.

Referral Program

Per a reader’s request to discuss the referral program, I will touch on that. The links to hubpages in this article are referral links. I haven’t referred any users in the past and honestly don’t really know how or how much can be made from the referrals – but if anyone signs up via the links, I will add that to the update next month.

A new site just like hubpages is on the scene, it is called InfoBarrel.com and they are just about the same as hubpages, except that they pay out a higher percentage of earnings from Adsense. You might want to add them to your arsenal.

2+ Years Later (UPDATE)

I originally wrote this article over 2 years ago and I have gotten a lot of requests to update it. Since that time hubpages has made some technical changes to how they pay (which actually make it easier), but you still earn via adsense, amazon, and ebay.

Over the last couple years I have added more hubs – mostly to get links and to drive traffic, but in doing so the earnings have increased as well.

In Nov ’11 they made $174, Dec ’11, $210, and this month is set to make about $200. So if you average the last 3 months it comes out to about $2.32 hub/month – which is a bit better than it was previously.

But even better than the earnings is just the fact that it is completely passive and I don’t have to do anything to maintain it!

How Can a Kid Make Money When Many Adults Are Unemployed?

The unemployment problem in this country is a harbinger for our next president to give serious consideration to. There are many people who at one time have had a well-paying job, and held a respectful place in their community. Today those people are driving cabs or working at a fast food joint just to help pay the bills. Sometimes people take it for granted that kids need to make money too. When kids have money, they spend it and help our economy. Kids need to make money, but how can a kid make money when many adults are unemployed? Has the job market retracted for kids the same way it has for adults? When the powers that be talk about creating jobs, kids don't get mentioned, but how can a kid make money?

Many kids are ambitious, motivated, and have lots of energy. Kids are fun to work with and many want to learn and have responsibility. How can a kid make money though if the jobs are not available? Another trait that kids have is that they are resilient, and they are not afraid to do the jobs that some adults may be reluctant to do. Today's kids are tomorrow's workforce, and when kids work it helps build character, confidence, and independence. Since there is a minimum age to be able to start working on the books, the question again rings loud "How can a kid make money?

It would certainly seem that kids are entrepreneurial by nature. Whenever we see a lemonade stand, we intuitively know that there is a young person behind this money making venture. Kids don't need to make top dollar to pay the bills, so they are open to opportunities that adults will shun. Kids will help clean the house, mow the lawn, rake the leaves, and clean the garage. So when we ask the question "How can a kid make money?" we don't have to look far for answers. A kid can deliver newspapers, run errands, wash cars, and walk the dog. Some adults may even feel a little envious realizing how many opportunities that there are for kids.

Kids are usually not shy about offering their services to someone. Once a kid is old enough, they want to babysit, especially girls. The boys may offer to do some painting. While the jobs or opportunities are not always readily apparent, the kids with the desire, fortitude, and insight will find their rainbow that will hold their pot of gold. How can a kid make money? It is a good question to ask kids and see their imagination go to work. They may surprise you and come up with something you may not have thought of. How many times do you wish you could find someone to pull weeds, or wash the car? Girl Scout cookies have not become one of the biggest selling cookies in the world for nothing. With a ready, willing, and ready workforce in place, our country is headed in the right direction.
