A brutal struggle of wills escalates into a mystical war of souls.
Seventeen-year-old Marian Hawthorn knows more about Asperger's than she ever wanted to. But she loves her brother Henry, and wants to keep him safe. However, her parents obsess about finding a cure for him--no matter the cost in money or convictions--and that obsession draws them all under the control of Pastor Andervender and his fringe church in Albuquerque. There she finds an unexpected friend and ally in her struggle to protect her brother John, the pastor's most beloved son, over whom a dangerous shadow looms that draws ever closer.

Soul Cages eBook Lynn Kilmore
L. M May's extraordinary debut novel oozes originality and inventiveness, like nothing I have encountered before. What struck me most about this fantastic novel was how the author draws on her own personal experiences, to make the writing so much more authentic and sincere. Aspergers is something that I strongly feel should be addressed within fiction, especially YA fiction as to make more readers aware of the condition. By drawing on her own family life (who are Autistic), L. M May is able to highlight what it must be like for her characters (both Henry, who suffers from Aspergers and Marian) to cope with a disorder. Full of heartfelt poignancy the exquisite prose is truth-drawing to the core, as it reflects life's tribulations as well as the highs. Character-driven and action-packed, I was taken on a whirlwind adventure containing thought-provoking connotation and significant meaning. "Soul Cages" is a story to loose yourself within and one that I didn't want to end!In a mystical war of souls, Marian Hawthorn is determined to keep her little brother safe. At only seventeen she becomes his protector because of his vulnerability, and sets out resolute to find a cure to Aspergers Syndrome. Marian is led to Pastor Andervender who resides in a small parish in Albuquerque, and to his son John whom she is drawn closer to with the coming shadow.
Heartrending, thrilling and riveting this truly remarkable read will have you rooted to your seat utterly transfixed by the storyline. The likeable main protagonists grow and develop quite quickly, so that you are drawn deeper into their story and grow attached to the narrative. It was clearly evident how much thought was put into this tale to express so much, with each event and unfolding scenario adding more depth to the substantial plot. I was most impressed by this wonderful story that touches your very soul and pierces a hole in your heart.

Soul Cages eBook Lynn Kilmore Reviews
This is a riveting read, heartbreaking and thrilling by turns. The character development is phenomenal and done at a good pace, allowing the reader quickly to understand and also genuinely like the young protagonists, Marian and John. The author also does an excellent job of describing the dysfunctional family dynamics that swirl around Marian and John. These dynamics allow for the creation of two extraordinary and resilient young people, while at the same time threatening their very existence.
This is a difficult story told incredibly well. Marian is a seventeen-year-old who has been thrust into the role of primary caregiver to her thirteen-year-old brother Henry, who has Asperger's, due to her parents' inability to cope with the reality of Henry's condition. The family has relocated in a last-ditch effort to find a cure, and Marian's life - and her future - are being consumed. Marian is much more realistic and much more capable of helping Henry than are her parents. She finds an unlikely ally in John, the son of the pastor her parents believe can cure Henry. She and John draw close as she and the pastor become adversaries. This is a fictional story, but it rings with authenticity and truth, and the shocking ending was absolutely stunning. This is not a light, easy read - in fact, it was very powerful and emotional - and it was oh, so good! While younger readers will certainly find something to relate to, older readers will find it rewarding, as well.
