PROS:
- Axton’s awkwardness is endearing. I didn’t find it over-the-top; it nicely conveys the fact that he hasn’t had a lot of human interaction without being too painful to read.
- The slow burn of Axton’s feelings for Leander is developed well. It’s gradual and in-depth.
- The author does a good job of slowly revealing Axton’s submissive nature by showing what kind of fantasies he has about Leander. This is not a whips-and-chains BDSM story, but Axton is a character who is much more comfortable following his partner’s lead than taking charge himself.

CONS:
- A story in which one of the characters has been well established as straight doesn’t work very well when you get a very limited number of scenes from that guy’s perspective. Why is he all of a sudden interested in this man when he’s been dating women all of his life? Is he bisexual or demisexual? I’ll buy either of those explanations, but I need to see into his head in order to do so.
- Point of view shifts are one of my biggest pet peeves in romances, and this story has them. Switching to present tense is another pet peeve of mine, even when I can tell that it’s done intentionally. I’m not sure that it’s done intentionally here; it might just be a mistake.
- There are some editing errors that drove me bonkers. For one, the characters’ names should NEVER be misspelled. For another, phrases like “taunt abs” and “ex cetera” could have been caught by even a marginally competent copy editor.

Overall comments: I find it very refreshing these days to read werewolf stories that don’t contain the instamate trope (or anything resembling the YouSmellLikeMyMate thing). That said, there were some things I didn’t like about Leander. I think he suffers from being the character whose POV we don’t see much of.

Axton, Axton, Axton... what are we going to do with you? Ah, maybe Leander knows, yes... it appears that he does.

Axton `s voice is snarky, intelligent, fun, a bit anti-social and distant. Of course, this is understandable as he's been living in near isolation in his cabin in the woods, away from people and other werewolves. Ah, yes, he's a were, who was banished from his pack. I'll let him tell you that story when you read it, just like he did with Leander. Back to the distant thing for a moment, it seems to be a fragile thing that he's ready to break free of if given a chance - not necessarily by someone else but by his own self.

And then there is Leander. He's kind, capable, in tune, caring, teasing and his level of smarta**ery is quite healthy. Man, gotta love when two smarta**es get together! I know I have more fun. ;) Anyway, these two challenge each other, physically and otherwise. They are two strong men with solid beliefs but wavering ideas. They seem at once both very compatible and yet at odds. It's not that they aren't trying because they are. It has that familiar ring of when you're getting to know someone and there are fits and starts, successes and failures when reading and reacting to each other's actions and emotions. Things are always more difficult when there are secrets and unknowns.

I had no idea what was coming about ¾'s of the way through this book. My heart was strangled, racing, the desperation and despair were dripping from the pages. The clashing elation and fear, what was going to happen??? My heart could barely take it, especially when I would insist on holding my breath. For those first three quarters, we experience the two steps forward, three steps back Axton and Leander take through several of their seasons. Sometimes together, sometimes not.

The tub scene. I shall only say that is one of the most tenderly, sensuously written passages I have read in a long, long time. It's a turning point, it's palpable the significance in this quiet act. When you know, when you want... mercifully, Axton has no clue at this moment, he's simply in it.

I could see some readers tossing this into the pile with others who conclude that the ending was too fast, things were resolved too quickly. I respectfully and wholeheartedly disagree. What we have here is how life measures itself often in millennia and milliseconds. It can be months or years before you hear the crackle and see the flash and smell the change. Suddenly, your plans, assumptions, fears and resignations get tossed right out of the swinging porch door, our heart taking command. We get to see, hear, taste, smell and feel their starts and stutters until their life together may finally be beginning. They have many seasons, and more, yet to share. There is immense promise for so much more.

So if you're looking for a fun, creative story with character voices that can't help but give you no choice to keep reading and find out what they'll next say and do, this book is for you. *Grins*
I'm just going to go ahead and get the biggest criticism out of the way first so that I can spend the rest of this review raving about the book. Winter Wolf needs an editor fairly badly. There are missing and misused words, and though less frequent, grammar mistakes and typos too. Plus, POVs shift at a dizzying pace with little to no warning, so it can sometimes be a little hard to keep up. I have definitely seen worse and it's not really too hard to figure out what the author actually means, so the text is still readable. But there are too many examples to not point out it in any complete review.

If it's bad enough to warrant a mention I often would consider dropping a star for poor editing, but not this time. The story and writing (editing aside) are just too wonderful for anything but 5 stars. Wayne's style is surprisingly evocative. I actually felt Axton's skittishness. I ground my teeth for his self denials and my heart ached for his 'mourning' periods. He felt incredibly fragile. I didn't connect as fully with Leander, but the story is told largely from Axton's POV. There are no other characters.

Axton was also simply a great character. He was noble, honourable, and utterly vulnerable without being wimpy in any way. I loved watching him flounder and then find his proverbial feet. It was nice to see him turn the werewolf genre on it's hierarchical head. Axton was definitely a beta, or maybe even omega type wolf. There was nothing alpha about him and I don't remember the last werewolf book I read that wasn't about an alpha wolf.

This is a really bittersweet story, with a writing style that perfectly matches the characters it describes. I highly recommend it. There seems to be a sequel on the way and I'm a little torn about how to feel about that. So often I've continued a series and felt it would have been kinder to the characters to stop at the first one, but I'd also simply love to see more of Ax and Lee. No doubt I'll read it.
